RE-DEFINING HOW WE LIVE

Our Mission

Where intentional design, beautiful architecture and sustainable luxury combine for a new approach to contemporary tropical living.

Redefining how we live by asking a simple question “what do you really need to be happy”?

  • At Plan B we believe in the transformative power of good design and that as developers we have a responsibility to “tread light lightly upon the earth”.

We create beautiful homes and well planned communities that have a deep connection to the environment and its local. Our thoughtfully crafted spaces designed for a decerning clientele are environments where individuals can discover a sense of calm that extends beyond the walls of a building.

We understand nuanced details where attention to light, surfaces, texture and landscaping are innately felt when one enters a thoughtfully designed home. This intangible feeling can help foster creativity, wellbeing and an overall sense of calm for people of all ages.

It is our mission to create havens which go beyond a commonplace notions of luxury.

We are strong advocates that buildings should not only be aesthetically pleasing but functional and socially responsible. We respect traditional land owners, their environment and the villages we became a part of. Plan B has a simply philosophy - we only design homes we would or do live in ourselves.

Intentional Design,
Inspiring Connections

Health, happiness & harmony.

Intentional design is at the heart of everything we do. Each detail is thoughtfully considered to be both practical and enhance a deep sense of relaxation one feels surrounded by simple yet luxurious settings.

Our thoughtfully crafted spaces are the sum effort of a dedicated team who celebrate design, aesthetics, and the collaborative effort with a profound sense of belonging to their chosen home of Bali.

  • In the world of Architectural design there exists an understanding that connection lies at the very core of the human experience. It is through this intention we have an opportunity to foster a greater sense of connection to our physical spaces, our family, our communities and ultimately to ourselves. Creating beautiful homes for families and individuals alike is what we do best.

Plan B was conceived to develop inspiring spaces for likeminded people at a time when we felt many parts of the world were, and perhaps still are, taking a wrong path in an increasingly divided and disconnected planet. As long-time residents of Bali we know how lucky our families are to be growing up here and we want to share this experience with like-minded people, those seeking a less complicated life and an appreciation of health, happiness and harmony.

We drew inspiration from the principles of Ikigai the Japanese concept of finding one’s purpose to address what we saw missing in the Bali property developing market. We used this principal of what we love doing, what we are good at and what we felt was needed to develop the Plan B property group.

An integral aspect our design approach is the Australian Aboriginal principal to “tread lightly upon the earth” with a deliberate focus on small to mid-scale developments. By embracing this principal we are mindful of our material choices, our land to build ratios, our preservation of existing trees and where we source our products. Our designs and interiors deliberately utilize Bali’s local artisan talents and materials, we are steadfast in how we store and treat rainwater and how we approach household waste and power consumption. Through these along with many other founding principles we strive to minimize our environmental footprint.

In our interiors and exteriors merge seamlessly where the boundaries between inside and outside become blurred. We love internal gardens, protected courtyards and shafts of natural light. Our properties don’t have imposing walls shielding out neighbours but are screened through greenery and architectural features. We celebrate morning light creating spaces for rituals be they tea, coffee, emails or meditation as well as shaded spaces designed to pick up breeze to embrace afternoon relaxation. Our houses have large undercover rain protected areas for use during the monsoon seasons so we nor our children ever feel “stuck inside”.

The bulk of our lighting is indirect and dimmable designed to highlight the textures and character of our materials. We use local stone as feature elements on floors and walls, rammed earth, textured Japanese plaster and recycled local woods. Our buildings are orientated for morning and afternoon light designed to be opened for maximum cross ventilation so one does not have to live in constant AC even in our tropical environment with glazing systems that fully retract from view inside walls to be brought out when needed for controlled central AC cooling. It is through this delicate balance between man-made and natural elements that we establish a connection to the world around us.

Architecture and Design

“Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication”.
– Leonardo Di Vinci.

Imagine a world where a building comes alive like an artwork, with every line, curve and material choice carefully thought out to create spaces that inspires and captivates. Where light throughout the day is trained to showcase surfaces and materials, where the division between inside and outside is blurred, where you exhale and immediately relax when you come home.

This is the intention with every Plan B project.

  • With each project we engage an internationally acclaimed architectural firm one we both admire and resonates with our philosophies and approach to design. We provide them with a well-developed design brief customized to the site discussing the emotive feeling and character of the project we are want to capture. This site selection is an exhaustive process before we find one that feels “just right” - the Goldilocks principal we like to call it.

We ask this question with each new project “would we live there and if so what would we build for ourselves”?

Proximity to schools, shops, yoga, gyms, spa’s and wellness, seclusion and tranquillity, traffic congestion, neighbours, orientation, prevailing breezes, natural outlook, existing tress we can work with all play a critical part in the selection process.

Our design process is akin to visual brainstorming, a sort of think tank with numerous people involved. We embrace a collaborative design effort where all ideas and concepts are valid. It then becomes a process of elimination and simplification until we have something creative, unique, harmonious and streamlined.

We believe that sustainability can coexist in contemporary architecture as not everyone wants to live in a bamboo building, as much as we love and appreciate these sculptural shapes and their use of materials. Plan B intertwines elegance, contemporary design and cutting edge technology with a deep appreciation and respect for the site.

Inspiration

“Nothing is original, steal from anywhere that resonates with inspiration or fuels your imagination. Devour old films, new films, music, books, paintings, photographs, poems, dreams, random conversations, architecture, bridges, street signs, trees, clouds, bodies of water, light and shadows. Select only the things to steal from that speak directly to your soul for if you do this your work and theft will be authentic: authenticity is invaluable, originality is non-existent and don’t bother concealing your thievery, celebrate it, credit everyone. Always remember what Jean-Luke Godard said “it’s not where you take things from its where you take them to.”

– Jim Jarmusch.

  • The list of people that inspires us is endless and seems to never stop growing, we discuss philosophy, mood, music and tone as much as design, architecture and marketing.

We draw much of our architectural inspiration from well known and little known architectural firms, interior designers, industrial designers, writers, painters and landscapers. We admire design with a strong appreciation of space and a “less is more” mentality that celebrate natural materials. We are drawn to architecture that sits in harmony with as opposed to dominating a site.

We love water the way it reflects light, we celebrate gardens be they internal or outdoor as places to connect to or simply admire. We believe strongly in the health benefits of living where your food grows and teaching children how to look after these gardens, all our homes therefore come with working vegetable and herb gardens.

We embrace design that asks our favourite question “ what do you really need to be happy?”

Technology

At Plan B are always looking for new ideas and innovative solutions that often has us looking back to how people lived in the past. The relationship they had with the land, their reliance in nature to provide and all that they took for granted. At Plan B we are trying to bring old world philosophies to a modern context implementing the basics that most of us already know.

We focus on environmental sustainability by using advancements in materials and building technology to reducing energy consumption, water usage and our overall ecological impact to minimize our environmental footprint wherever we can.

  • In modern home construction various sustainable technologies are shaping the way we build and inhabit our living spaces. Plan B prides itself at being at the forefront of such practices not simply because of its marketing appeal and low-end running costs but because it is simply the correct thing to do.

Low-energy LED lighting consumes significantly less electricity, provides a longer lifespan and reduced environmental impact. Their adaptability in design allows us to employ creative and efficient lighting solutions enhancing both aesthetics and functionality while minimizing energy consumption and long-term costs.

Rainwater collection and treatment systems are reshaping modern homes as clean drinking water becomes an increasingly precious commodity. Harvesting and storing rainwater not only reduces reliance on traditional water sources it also minimizes the environmental strain caused by excessive runoff. Our rainwater once collected is double filtered with essential minerals added meaning the water you use for showers, cleaning teeth and drinking is as close to natural alkaline spring water as is possible. All greywater is collected and treated for the use in our gardens and vegetable beds, we do our utmost that nothing goes to waste.

In the pursuit of energy efficiency we use solar cells with central ducted air conditioning and heat pump converters. This systems utilize solar power with the excess heat generated from AC used to heat the hot water tanks in each house. By optimizing energy usage and reducing reliance on conventional power sources it reduces a stress on the environment plus saves on energy bills. This integrated approach to power exemplifies our direction towards more a sustainable and holistic property development group where technology not only enhances comfort but also aligns with our environmental stewardship.

Rammed earth and green roofs represent additional elements we often adopt. Rammed earth, a traditional building technique now revitalized, utilizes densely packed earth to create an energy-efficient and thermal envelope for the home. It is an extremely beautiful textured material that requires no additional process once in place. This principal combined cross ventilation and green roofs that act as layer of insulation promoting energy efficiency and biodiversity helping maintain a constant internal temperature.
